Craft breweries getting jammed by distributors

Let's talk about beer for a bit. I like it and drink it regularly. I particularly like beer that comes from small breweries. If the breweries are not small, that's only because they have very recently built their business from pretty close to nothing by making good, quality beers that fit with what people are now calling "craft beers." Nevada has several very good craft breweries. I imagine a few of them are in Las Vegas, but I know about the Reno ones, and I have to say that the ones I'm

Hiking Cross Peak

Cross Peak is a short little hike in west Reno that you can do in an hour or so. The peak itself overlooks Caughlin Ranch and has a bit of a steep final section, but not too much for someone who gets out on a trail every now and then. The peak itself isn't named on any maps that I could find, but gets its name from the iron memorial at the top that forms a cross and some other artwork. I had heard from people that they could do it in the morning before work and in the past few months I've made

How many again?

I was driving south on I-580 the other day and saw a sticker on the back window of a car. I didn't get a picture because I was driving and I don't do that. The sticker read, "ZERO F★CKS GIVEN." Exactly like that, with the star and everything. I didn't think much of it at the time because that's totally a thing everyone says now, right? There are memes and all that crap regarding the saying, all of which are dumb. The sticker is also dumb. Seeing that sticker stuck with me, though. Like, for a

I'm no fan of Adam Laxalt. I think he's a cynical and harmful participant in Nevada's government. So, with that in mind, you should understand that my initial thoughts about this article are such: What kind of person are you that when you call someone to have a conversation, that person thinks it might be a good idea to record that conversation? What kind of person are you that you would go out of your way to make this kind of request? What kind of person are you that when someone's suspicions

This hasn't ever really been a political issue before now. I know that there are some weird hippie liberals who avoid vaccinations, but with Trump giving these wackjob science deniers (weird that he would welcome someone denying science) an audience, the Republicans can now sleep easy knowing they will own this for a while.

This crap has to go on all accounts. There's plenty to be upset about with this administration filled with demagogues and assholes whose goal is to rip off the public, so why invent garbage to throw all legitimate criticism into question? There is no reason. Let's stop sharing this crap and call it out when we see it. Here's a bit of shorthand I use, if you care. If it's a meme, don't share it. The quote is likely out of context and probably altered or completely wrong anyway. That's the tip

Bias versus facts

It’s so easy to fall into a trap about media bias when discussing news and how it works with friends or people you just feel like arguing with. I tend to do it all the time, despite my own personal insistence to stick to facts as the basis for my arguments instead of going to the opinion well. Where this has gotten really, really dumb is in the fact that the President’s people have begun to challenge facts in official ways. Sean Spicer is the easy target, but there is nothing about this

This is a nice and easy read. If you genuinely care to know why the march happened yesterday, start with this. I wasn't able to make the march. I was home sick all week and decided not to go out on what should have been the last day of recovery. My wife and daughter both went.

Climbing Boundary Peak

Boundary Peak is Nevada’s highest point. Boundary gets its name from the fact that is lies right on the border between Nevada and California. It’s in the White Mountain Range and is the lowest of the major peaks in that range. But it’s the only one that is on the Nevada side of the border, and it’s higher than Wheeler Peak, which is located in the eastern part of the state, so it gets to claim the title. It has always bummed me out that Nevada's highest mountain rests in a place where

Climbing Mount Rainier

For more background on this, read about my plan. I wrote that in February to explain my upcoming (at the time) trip to Mount Rainier. I completed that trip in July and began writing this in September. It took me a while to process everything, decide that I really did have something to say about it, and just sort of want to sit down and write about it. In short, I did a six day skills seminar on Mount Rainier to learn mountaineering stuff. It’s a prerequisite course for being able to climb
